For the most part, the live versions of Sabbath songs on Speak of the Devil totally kick the butt of the originals, however much I might miss the acoustic section of “Symptom of the Universe”. Anyway, when I’m in the mood for Sabbath, and I don’t end up listening to “Spiral Architect”, I always go for Ozzy Osbourne’s Speak of the Devil, which I always thought of as the greatest Black Sabbath live album Black Sabbath never released. Sabbath were far from a philosophically deep band – they were pretty sophomoric most of the time – but that song resonates with me on a surprisingly existential level. “Of all the things I value most in life/I see my memories/And feel their warmth/And know that they are good”. Except for “Spiral Architect”, which I think is the greatest song they ever did and is my go-to Black Sabbath track. You know, when I am in the mood to listen to Black Sabbath, I hardly ever actually listen to Black Sabbath.
